The claim that "diets do not work" is based on fundamentally flawed studies.
People glance at weight loss research and immediately jump to the conclusion that diets do not work.
Take a closer look at those trials, though, and you'll spot the same patterns every time:
- The participants are obese and diabetic.
- Interventions are micromanaged by experts (doctors, dieticians, and clinical staff) who impose massive deficits of 800 to 1200 calories.
- A lot of the trials rely heavily on self-reported food intake and progress tracking.
Sure enough, people drop weight while the study is active. Then the trial ends, time passes, and the weight comes right back. Critics use this exact drop-off to argue that diet and exercise are useless, and in the next breath, they cite the same flawed literature to push GLP-1s.
Here is where the logic falls apart.
To start, average obese or diabetic individuals do not sign up for clinical trials. How many people in your daily life have ever enrolled in one? The folks who actually participate usually fall into two distinct camps: either they believe something is fundamentally broken in their bodies and hope an experimental protocol might save them, or they simply do not care about the health outcome and just want the cash stipend.
Next, when an expert enforces an extreme caloric deficit, the subject learns to equate getting in shape with sheer misery. Think about what is genuinely sustainable: cutting out four slices of bread across a day, or banning bread and rice entirely? An aggressive deficit carves out huge chunks of your daily diet, leaving you starving and irritable. Why put yourself through that when you could run a modest deficit, take more time, and give your body room to adjust gradually?
Worse, having a specialist handle all the dietary math robs the participant of any real education. If someone hands you a plate and says "eat this to lose weight," what have you actually learned? You do not own the achievement. You never develop the autonomy, pride, or shift in self-image that comes from steering your own transformation.
Finally, the data itself is compromised from the jump. The average person is terrible at estimating their caloric intake, making self-reported figures completely unreliable when aggregated.
