Should a skinny fat person bulk or cut?

Many people claim to be skinny fat, which often creates confusion:

  1. Am I skinny? If so, do I need to cut?

  2. Am I fat? If so, do I need to bulk?

Traditionally, “skinny fat” referred to someone with a relatively low BMI who has skinny arms and legs but still carries high body fat usually around the belly, lower body, or both.

But today, many overweight people (by BMI) also use the term “skinny fat” just because they have skinny arms and legs.

What does this tell us? It tells us that “skinny fat” alone is not a good enough description of a physique.

So what is?

Weight, height, and body fat.

Weight and height tell us how large a person is.

Body fat % tells us what that body mass is made of. Is it muscle? Is it fat? Out of 80 kg body weight, how much is muscle and how much is fat?

This is why we recommend using this free planner, because it’s not practical to describe every possible combination of height, weight, and body fat %.

So if a person has higher body fat but lower muscle mass, they won’t have much muscle definition to show.

Now, in a skinny fat situation, there are many possible combinations of height, weight, and body fat %.

So what should you do?
